Bee Hive Parts - 2

Bottom Board. The bottom board provides protection for the bees against draft and temperature from the bottom of the hive. Their are several type of bottom board, and one commonly used is the "Standard" Bottom Board. Standard for what? Well, its standard for the temperate countries. It exactly looks like this:
Note from the description that it is two sided. On one side the entrance height is 3/4 inches while the other side its 3/8 inche, suppossedly for summer and winter, respectively.

I tried the US standard bottom board on my hives, and lo and behold. The bees were having difficulty in living up with the 3/4 inches entrance on the US standard hive.

So the modification made was that the height adapted to both side of the bottom board is 3/8 inches both for summer and monsoon season.

The modified bottom board we used in Benito's Bee Farm is quite satisfactory for our purpose.Because it's not only effective for the bees to thermoregulate but it also stop most flying predators and robbers on track. The narrow entrance of the modified bottom board also adapts itsef to most anchorage for our other equipments used in management and harvest faility, such as external feeders and bee pollen collectors among others.

Note: the hieght of the riser only uses one measurement, and that is 3/8" high, for beekeeping in our tropical Philippines. We do away with the 3/4" riser for reason that the humid tropical air do more harm than good to our bees.
