Bee Hive Parts - 2

Bottom Board. The bottom board provides protection for the bees against draft and temperature from the bottom of the hive. Their are several type of bottom board, and one commonly used is the "Standard" Bottom Board. Standard for what? Well, its standard for the temperate countries. It exactly looks like this:
Note from the description that it is two sided. On one side the entrance height is 3/4 inches while the other side its 3/8 inche, suppossedly for summer and winter, respectively.

I tried the US standard bottom board on my hives, and lo and behold. The bees were having difficulty in living up with the 3/4 inches entrance on the US standard hive.

So the modification made was that the height adapted to both side of the bottom board is 3/8 inches both for summer and monsoon season.

The modified bottom board we used in Benito's Bee Farm is quite satisfactory for our purpose.Because it's not only effective for the bees to thermoregulate but it also stop most flying predators and robbers on track. The narrow entrance of the modified bottom board also adapts itsef to most anchorage for our other equipments used in management and harvest faility, such as external feeders and bee pollen collectors among others.

Note: the hieght of the riser only uses one measurement, and that is 3/8" high, for beekeeping in our tropical Philippines. We do away with the 3/4" riser for reason that the humid tropical air do more harm than good to our bees.

THE BEE HIVE

Langstroth Beehive
The common bee hive is the standard beehive used in many parts of the world for beekeeping. The advantage of this hive is that the bees build honeycomb into frames, which can be moved with ease. The frames are designed to prevent bees from attaching honeycombs where they would either connect adjacent frames, or connect frames to the walls of the hive. The movable frames allow the beekeeper to manage the bees in a way which was formerly impossible.

Beehive in Philippines
This is one peculiar beehive components in keeping bees in the Philippines. The hive stand is simply a wooden stand that should elevate the Bee Hive high enough to be out of reach of one of the most voracious honey bee predators in the Philippines, namely the Cane Toad commonly know as the "baki".

Cane Toad eats Honeybees
This warty creatures can eat up to 300 bees a night. Imagine five (5) toads waiting in each hive entrants. Their filthy tongue waiting for our precious bees to fall prey or fly low just to be eaten by them. There is no way I should permit them to do so. In the early parts of my beekeeping career, I found out to my horror, scattered near the entrances of my bee hives, are toads pooh with little shiny bead-like remnants lining all throughout those poohs. Looking closer, I found out that those were actually honeybee eyes. There were hundred of it on just one toad-pooh. And you should see the size of those toad-pooh! It's as big as my thumb. It was such a horrific sight and it did made me furious. So furious that I concocted a plan to mass exterminate those bee eating toads out of my bee-yard. But then again, the guilt of depriving even the lowest creature the right to live on this earth made me to just live them alone and go for the alternative... So the alternative management of course is.....

Hive stand.
The hive stand effectively elevates the hive & protect it from flooding during heavy rainfall in tropical Philippines. My bee yard is in the Eastern part of Visayas fronting the Pacific Ocean. So, the heavy rain clouds frequents our area. The hive stands also offers temporary reprieve from intermittent flooding during the monsoon months were this heavy downpours occur.

The hive stand make it easy to work and manipulate the colony. Since the Brood Chamber of the colony is elevated, its easier for the beekeeper's back.

One should coat the legs of the hive stand with oil to ward of the another local ferocious predators--- the red ants. These ants abound in our locality. These ferocious predators attacks colonies in search for food, mainly sweet foods like sugars or honey in the hive. The oil on the legs of the hive stands should deter and discourage this little devils from attacking our honeybees.

Construction of Hive Stand
Hive stands solves most of our beekeeping problems. Several designs and construction are available at our choosing. It can be made of wood or steel. They can either carry one hive only or two colonies in a stand. Its up to your preference and liking to adapt its to suite your needs. One thing sure, its one indispensable beekeeping components one should consider.

You can search for the various design and construction of hive stands on these site, since I don't want to repeat what they have already written. It was enough for me to share with you how i used the hive stands to my advantage.
